BE ADVISED: THE SCAM CAN BE VIA EMAIL, TEXT MESSAGE (SMS) OR MAIL IN A CARDBOARD ENVELOPE.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
AUTHENTIC-LOOKING IRS LOGO, FAKE IRS CONTACT INFORMATION AND/OR LINK TO ALTERNATE SITE that requests sensitive information, such as:
PHOTOS OF YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE
CELLPHONE NUMBER(S)
BANK ACCOUNT/ROUTING NUMBERS
SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER(S)
DPFT IS REMINDING YOU THAT THE IRS WILL NEVER INITIATE CONTACT WITH TAXPAYERS BY EMAIL, TEXT OR SOCIAL MEDIA REGARDING A BILL OR TAX REFUND.
